Packing a Bag When You’re Not Fully Out Yet

There is a specific kind of anxiety that comes with leaving the house when you’re not fully out yet.
You want to feel like yourself. But you also need to get through the day without a situation. So you carry two versions of yourself in one bag. And honestly? There is an art to it.
I did this for a long time. Here is what I carried, and why.
1. A neutral bag
Don’t start with a bag that draws attention before you even open it. A structured tote or a plain crossbody works. Nothing with frills or sequins — not because there is anything wrong with that, but because the bag is not the point right now. You are trying to feel like yourself on the inside while you figure out the outside. The bag is just transport.
2. Your moisturiser — always
I talked about moisturising in an earlier post. When you’re closeted or not fully out, your skin care routine is one of the first places you can quietly be yourself. A small tube of a good moisturiser in your bag means you can take care of your skin no matter where you are. Nobody questions moisturiser. It’s invisible self-care.
3. A lip balm or tinted lip balm
This one is small but it matters. A tinted lip balm gives you just a little bit of colour without it reading as “I am wearing makeup.” It’s the kind of thing you can apply at your desk or in a car without anyone batting an eye. It does something for your mood too. Even just a small something.
4. A hair tie or headband
If you’re growing your hair out — which is a whole journey in itself — a hair tie is practical AND it gives you options. You can wear your hair down when you feel safe, or pull it back when you don’t. Having that choice in your bag is more powerful than it sounds.
5. A change of clothes — if you can
This one is not always possible. But if you have somewhere you can go — a friend’s place, your car, anywhere private — carrying something that feels more like you can be a lifeline on hard days. Even just a softer top. Something that means at some point in that day, you got to breathe.
6. Your phone, fully charged
This sounds obvious. It isn’t. Your phone is your community, your map, your safe exit, your people. When you’re not fully out, you are often carrying a lot alone. Having access to your Discord, your group chat, your safe people — that matters. Charge your phone. Carry a power bank if you can.
7. Something small that is just yours
This is the one most people don’t talk about. I used to carry a small thing — nothing anyone would notice — that was just mine. A keyring. A small stone. Something that said I know who I am even if nobody else here does yet. It sounds small. It isn’t.
The bag you carry when you’re not fully out is not just a bag. It’s a survival kit. It’s how you get through the day and still have something left for yourself at the end of it.
You are not hiding. You are just not ready yet. And that is okay.
There is no rush. You will get there.
